Language Focus

Conversation strategies help communication. Ask for repetition, meaning or slower speech. Use short responses and follow-up questions to show interest and keep talking.
04 β€’ English & Culture

🌎 Culture Corner β€” Communication Is More Than Perfect Grammar

Successful communication does not require perfect English. Speakers use gestures, repetition, examples, questions and context. Communication styles can vary, so patience and attention are useful intercultural skills.

🌍 And where you live...?

What do people do to help communication when someone is learning a language where you live?

05 β€’ Reading & Listening

πŸ“– A Conversation at the Youth Center

Read the text. Listen to the complete reading. Then answer the five questions.

A Conversation at the Youth Center

Kai meets Olivia at an international youth event. English is not Kai's first language, and he feels nervous at first. Olivia speaks quickly, so Kai says, β€œCould you repeat that more slowly, please?” Olivia smiles and repeats her question. Later, Kai does not know the word β€œworkshop,” so he asks what it means. Olivia explains it with a simple example. As they continue talking, Kai becomes more confident. He asks follow-up questions and uses phrases such as β€œReally?” and β€œWhat about you?” By the end of the conversation, both students have learned something about each other's schools and hobbies.
